On set in Cornwall for Doc Martin Series 8 - experienced drone crews in film & TV
Back in 2017 we provided the aerial film for series 8 of the hit ITV comedy drama Doc Martin. After a brief meeting with the director & associate producer we ended up going with the Inspire 2 as our drone of choice. Although the director wanted to shoot on a full frame sensor the benefits of using the I2 & X5S combo far outweighed the drawbacks, bearing in mind this was pre X7 camera days where the micro 4/3 sensor was the only option for the I2.
As our focus for the shoot was an entire gig race, it was important we had adequate flight time. The Inspire 2 allowed us to operate for over 15 minutes which is almost double our flight time when compared to the cinema grade packages we fly with Red & Arri sensors. Initially we had planned to operate from a boat but ended up on the Port Isaac break water at high tide which provided a secluded location to operate from with a perfect vantage point.
Our segment of filming was scheduled towards the end of the day, the gig crew and cast on board had already raced multiple times during which the film crew captured the event via a tracking boat, whilst on board each gig and finally via drone. It was hard to believe that the racing crews had the stamina to go all day especially in the sweltering heat.
